My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Whatever you called it. This novel could be a romance, could be historical, could be about war. The writer has ways with descriptive metaphors inserting haiku and poems. The surrounding pictures of tropical forests and climate were vivid. The horrendous tortures of POW were gruesome and I've to skip several pages to avoid nightmares in my sleep. I live in Japan, I know once the Japanese put their mind on an object of loyalty, they would obediently serve faithfully that object of power with blind loyalty. All the cruelties of war by the Japanese are base on loyalty for the Emperor. The harder the torture, the deeper the loyalty. What is the measurement or barometer of loyalty? Their minds brainwashed, warped and insanely indoctrinated in the name of the Emperor, who was unaware and uninformed of the cruelty done under his name.
