Jahrera merenung haiwan ini, digelar sebagai Squirrel Monkey. Haiwan ini tupai atau monyet?

Wajahnya bagai tupai tapi perangainya bagai monyet. Dengan kekuatan yang ada pada monyet dan keligatan yang ada pada tupai, mungkinkah haiwan ini terjatuh ke tanah?

Bak peribahasa melayu ini.

Ini sebaris peribahasa Jepun.

Saru mo ki kara ochiru.

Even monkeys fall from trees.

Sepandai-pandai tupai melompat, sekali gawal juga.

Rupa-rupanya orang Jepun juga ada peribahasa yang seakan-akan dengan peribahasa tupai itu.

Yoroshiku onegai shimasu...tidak ada istilah ini dalam BM atau BI.
Kalau huraikan benang dalam tenun kain frasa ini, harus membuka kamus besar dan teliti satu persatu ungkapannya.

Baiklah, saya cuba. Bukan, ini bukan sessi belajar bahasa Jepun. Ini catatan gaya penghidupan yang bermula dengan frasa yang paradoks ini.

Sebelum saya buka naratif, silalah lihat makna atau maksud asal ungkapan di tajuk itu.

Perkataan asalnya ialah negai atau wish. I wish to be rich. I wish you can be rich so I can share it with you.

Atau desire. I desire to be the first Malay president of America. I desire to make everybody around me happy or something like that.

Favour. Do me this favour, will you?. I beg you favour me by being my friend. Or on this line of thinking.

So the Japanese use these three situations for the phrase in the topic.

When you are introduced to someone new, all you have to do is to say "yoroshiku onegai shimasu"! You don't have to say anything else, this phrase will do, its complete in itself...self-explanatory.
You don't have to make small talk about your family or that person's family, just this phrase suffice.

Ok, now I open my story.

Dia selalu terlihat orang itu di satu tempat. Mungkin setiap kali dia berada di tempat itu, orang itu akan tersenyum padanya. Maka dia ingin menjadi kawan pada orang itu. Tak salah, berkawan sahaja.
Tapi apakah caranya untuk membuka pintu perkenalan ini?

Dia menggunakan adat yang dia sudah biasa dibesarkan..."yoroshiku onegai shimasu"!

Tapi dia tidak tahu frasa ini dalam bahasa melayu atau Inggeris.
Dia gasak sahaja.
"can you be my friend?"

Yang mendengarnya semestinya merasa terhormat, merasa dirinya diappresiasi, gembira sangat.
Yang mendengarnya, bukan orang Jepun, memang tidak tahu maksudnya yang cetek dalam bahasa Jepun (lihat lagi sekali di atas).

Yang mendengar itu menanya balik..."why me?"
Dia membalas dengan selamba, "just be my friend"!

Tapi situasi ini tidak tamat di sini.

Saya mula menulis di blog ini pada Oct. 7, 2003. Menjadi 5 tahun pada Oct. tahun ini, 2008.
Yang memulakan saya ke dunia blog ini ialah tak lain tak bukan sdr MBA, sekarang Naib Presiden JICA Malaysia.
Niat sdr MBA membukakan blog ini mungkin maukan saya menulis segala pengalaman pulau ini sebab beliau sudah berkursus di Okinawa 2 kali, tahun 1989 dan tahun 1999.
Masa itu tahap bahasa melayu pada diri saya sangat lemah. Saya tidak pandai menulis bahasa melayu dan tidak berapa faham pada pembacaan bahasa melayu.
Saya masih mengikut ejaan lama sebab tidak tahu sistem ejaan melayu telah diubah dalam pertengahan tahun 70 an.
Ejaan menulis entri di blog ini masa permulaan dulu contohnya...

di-kampong
kalang-kabut
ayer sungei
beneh buloh

dan

masa itu saya rasa sangat bangga dalam keadaan tidak tahu itu.

Alangkah pedih hati, sedikit demi sedikit, saya dapati yang saya telah kehilangan 20 tahun dalam ilmu kesasteraan bahasa melayu.
Kenapa sedikit demi sedikit baru saya tahu?
Sebab orang yang mengajar saya bukan guru tapi kawan kenalan blog ini juga.
Mereka masih bersama saya sekarang...
ucapan terima kasih dan penghargaan pada Sri Diah dan Zareda.

Dalam kekecewaan kelemahan bahasa melayu, adakalanya saya rasa sungguh perit dan malu dan ingin memberhentikan menulis blog.
Tapi dengan berfikir positif, tidak ada untungnya jika saya berhenti menulis.
Saya harus teruskan...

Cara saya menaikkan taraf tulis bahasa melayu sangat mudah..
saya cari tulisan blog yang menulis dengan betul.
Betul dengan susunan ayat, perkataan dan nilai cerita dalam blog.
Saya belajar dari beberapa blog setiap hari.
Mungkin penulis blog itu merasa pelik jika mereka perhatikan stat dan ip saya yang selalu menziarah blog mereka.

Itulah cara saya.

Pada saya orang kaya bahasa, fasih dan lancar dalam beberapa berbahasa, orang begitulah yang saya hormati.
Bukan kekayaannya, bukan pangkat Tuan Terhormat, Datin dan berbagai.
Saya amat tertarik dengan orang yang pandai berbahasa, tak kiralah bahasa itu.

Saya tidak berani membuat nilaian dan tafsiran pada keadaan bahasa melayu yang bertukar-tukar di Malaysia sekarang.
Itu satu topik yang amat sensitif.

Saya tidak mau blog ini menjadi tempat kontroversi. Sebenarnya jika ada topik kontroversi, mesti stat pembaca naik, tapi itu bukan niat saya menulis blog. Bukan niat saya mencapai sehari 500 atau 1000 pembaca.

Saya mau tidur dengan lena setiap malam, saya maukan aman batin, saya tidak mau berbalah dengan orang dalam blog sebab mungkin apabila berjumpa dan bersemuka, mereka itu orang bersopan santun.
Tidakkah terasa membazir jika kenangan pembalahan itu menghalang persahabatan di luar alam siber?

Saya sangat bangga dengan kemajuan yang telah dicapai dalam memperbaiki diri menaikkan taraf bahasa melayu, walaupun langkah itu hanya satu atau dua anak tangga tapi itu satu kemajuaan bagi saya.

Saya harap orang melayu berusahalah apa cara sekali pun memajukan bahasa sendiri.

Lihatlah cara orang Jepun mengekalkan standard bahasa mereka.

-Foreigners must attain a certain level of proficiency in Japanese required to work in Japan.

-Year 2006, 46 countries and 440,000 people took the test for Japanese proficiency.

-Japanese proficiency as one condition for foreigners applying for residency visa.

Orang yang tidak berbahasa Jepun sememangnya tidak dapat hidup dengan sempurna di negara ini.

Begitu kuat mereka menjaga dan begitu bangga mereka dengan bahasa ibunda negara.

Conditions for resident visa status of skilled foreign workers such as engineers may be relaxed if they attain a certain level of proficiency in Japanese, government sources said Monday.
The measures, including shortening the required number of years of work experience required, are being considered both to increase the variety of foreign workers being accepted in Japan and to encourage more foreigners to study Japanese, the sources said.
The relaxed conditions would be applicable to foreigners who want to enter Japan for specialist or technical jobs, they said.
Resident visa status for foreigners staying and working in Japan for a long time is classified under the immigration law by type of job — with exceptions such as spouses or descendants of Japanese nationals, who are not restricted in working in Japan.
Engineers, for example, are permitted to enter Japan to work in technical fields if they have graduated from a university in that subject or have work experience of at least 10 years.
The Foreign Ministry and Justice Ministry are considering shortening the number of years of work experience required to about five from 10, according to the sources.
They are also considering using the annual Japanese Language Proficiency Test to gauge applicants' Japanese ability, the sources said.
In fiscal 2006, about 440,000 people in Japan and 46 countries and territories took the test offered by Japan Education Exchanges and Services, which estimates that 2.98 million people study Japanese abroad.
There is concern that relaxing conditions could lead to a decrease in the quality of workers, but if they have proficiency in Japanese they would be able to learn the relevant skills in Japan, the sources said.
Japan decided in 1999 to begin actively accepting skilled foreign workers while keeping its restrictions on unskilled workers.
On Jan. 15, Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura unveiled a plan to consider Japanese proficiency one of the conditions for foreigners to stay in Japan.

Tolonglah, sesiapa yang pandai menterjemahkan bahasa ini pada saya yang hapah pun tidak gerti-gerti.

Appreciations

The Japanese people have many ways of expressing their gratitude and appreciations. They let known their feelings of thankfulness with ease without letting it sounds like they owe you the world.

Gokuro sama deshita. One version of thank you but the word thank you is not even mentioned. In what situations do you use this phrase.
The postman delivers you letter and it so happen you are near by, you don't keep quiet and just let him go.
You shout..."gokuro sama deshita...." at him and he would nod at you back.
When the meterman comes quietly to check on the meter at the back of the house, he would say something like "excuse me, I am checking the meter" of course in Japanese to nobody. He just say it to let know to anybody around the area.
So, when you hear this being said and see he has done his job, you shout all the way from the house..."gokuro sama deshita" but you don't need him to reply back. The most he might just shout back "hait".

O-tsukare sama deshita, another way of saying thank you.
Normally this version is said between friends.
Like when you've bathed together in a common public bath and you say to your friends who is about to leave..."o-tsukare sama deshita".
Or like when my sister-in-law helps to clean her father's house, I would show my face and just say..."o-tsukare sama deshita".
In this case, I wouldn't say "arigatou", it's not very right.

Then you have that all too familiar phrase "sumimasen deshita".
"sumimasen deshita" is an all-functionable word, use very loosely but actually have little meaning to it.
You want to have some space, you say it.
You want to start a conversation, you say it.
You want to ask for direction, you say it.
You want to tell somebody who steps on your foot shouting inside "you big, blind rejected samurai, let go my foot", you say this with a smiling face.
Last of all, maybe I missed something else, you tell your appreciation, you say it.
Some nice guy open the door for you to pass through, you say it.
You let a woman holding a shrieking baby go through the cash register first and you will get a happy "sumimasen deshita".

Anyway, why am I giving a Japanese lesson on a beautiful morning now?
Because I do not have much to write anymore. There are many things on my mind right now.
And...
I have many people to thank and give appreciations...
like the huge steamer an ultra-active lady sent by post from Tokyo that she brought over from KL and I have yet to use it...
"o-sewa sama deshita".
Like the novel, Cinta Fansuri, a friend from KL sent via another friend that I still can't figure out the plot even after passing bab 6..."o-tsukare sama deshita".
Like the six-metre Beijing silk with soft rose-petal design, from a friend whose brother took the trouble to bring all over Hokaido in North Japan and sent it to me, while I am still trying hard to figure out the suitable style to pattern it..."sumimasen deshita".

To all these friends and from the bottom of my heart...
"honto ni arigatou gozaimashita".

Hidung diri

Orang Melayu bertepuk dada bila mengatakan diri sendiri "saya, aku, den, deyan, kita, hamba"
Tapi...
Orang Jepun tunjuk hidung untuk mengatakan diri sendiri "watakushi, watashi, washi, boku, ore, wagaya, uchi"

Pelikkan, kenapa mereka tunjuk hidung untuk melambangkan diri sendiri.

Bila saya balik Singapore 3-4 tahun lepas, saya meminta anak sedara yang berumur 2 tahun memanggil nama saya. Dengan terikut adat Jepun, saya menunjukkan hidung.

Tengok huruf kanji di atas itu. Huruf itu bermakna seratus. Lihat kotak empat segi di bahagian bawah. Huruf itu mengambarkan hidung, tektik mengingat huruf kanji.

Kotak empat segi itu menggambarkan hidung dalam perkataan seratus.

Hidung ini seratus tahun. Amin.

Surat

Surat ini untuk Kak Azyan, sdr Fabilah dan Rajiah yang berada di Edinburgh, UK sekarang.

Saya tulis 2 bulan lepas yang saya cuba buat blog mengajar bahasa Jepun. Janji ini belum lupa lagi.
Sebelum seseorang mahir dalam sesuatu bahasa, dia perlu belajar yang asas dahulu. Otto tidak setuju saya buat blog mengajar bahasa pasar Jepun sebab ini cara tidak betul. Ini akan menghilangkan kecantikkan bahasa itu.
Memang betul, bila saya terdengar bangsa lain bercakap bahasa Jepun mengikut buku, saya rasa tercekik! Tak tahan!
Itulah saya ingin mengajar bahasa Jepun pasar atau bahasa tidak rasmi.
Saya mohon ma'af, boss tidak benarkan.

Soal keputusan Shohei, masih belum tahu lagi. Ada lagu lama berbunyi "Jgn tunggu lama-lama, nanti lama-lama dia diambil orang....!!!"
Ini bukan soal diambil orang, yang peliknya tidak ada seorang pun dari kakak ipar, sepupu atau sedara lain dimaklumkan keputusan anaknya hingga hari ini. Pelik.
